Low Energy Availability

Meaning

Low Energy Availability (LEA) occurs when daily energy intake is insufficient to cover the energy expenditure required for basal metabolic function, physical activity, and necessary physiological processes, including robust hormone production. This state, often quantified relative to lean body mass, triggers a systemic energy conservation mode that directly suppresses non-essential functions like reproduction and growth. It is a state of chronic caloric deficit relative to need.
