Low Energy Availability

Meaning

Low energy availability (LEA) is a state where the energy intake remaining for core physiological functions, after accounting for the energy expended during exercise, is insufficient to support optimal health and homeostasis. This deficit compromises numerous bodily systems, including the endocrine, reproductive, skeletal, and immune systems. Clinically, LEA is a critical factor in the development of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea and other forms of hormonal dysregulation, particularly in active individuals.
