Zinc Fingers

Meaning

Zinc Fingers are small, evolutionarily conserved protein structural motifs characterized by the coordination of one or more zinc ions, typically by cysteine and/or histidine residues, to stabilize their folded structure. These domains are fundamentally important in molecular endocrinology and genetics because they mediate the specific binding of transcription factors to DNA or RNA, allowing them to regulate gene expression. They are critical components of steroid hormone receptors, such as the androgen and estrogen receptors.
