Zeitgeber Synchronization

Meaning

Zeitgeber Synchronization is the process by which the body’s master circadian clock, the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), aligns its internal rhythm with external environmental cues, known as Zeitgebers or “time-givers.” The most potent Zeitgeber is light exposure, followed by meal timing, physical activity, and social cues. Achieving synchronization is fundamentally necessary for maintaining hormonal homeostasis, regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and ensuring the optimal timing of critical physiological events, such as cortisol and melatonin release.
