Xenobiotic-Responsive Elements

Meaning

Xenobiotic-Responsive Elements (XREs) are specific DNA sequences located in the promoter regions of genes that encode for Phase I and Phase II detoxification enzymes and transporters. These elements function as genetic switches, allowing the genes to be rapidly activated in response to exposure to xenobiotics—foreign chemical substances, including environmental toxins and pharmaceuticals. They are a core component of the body’s protective mechanism against chemical insult.
