Wound Remodeling

Meaning

Wound Remodeling is the final, protracted phase of the tissue repair process, following the initial inflammation and proliferation stages, characterized by the reorganization of the newly formed collagen matrix and the gradual maturation of the resulting scar tissue. This critical stage involves a delicate, highly regulated balance of synthesis and degradation of extracellular matrix components, mediated by enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases. Hormonal factors, particularly growth hormone and sex steroids, are key modulators of this process, determining the final strength and functional integrity of the repaired tissue.
