Windows of Vulnerability

Meaning

Specific, identifiable periods in the physiological cycle or across the lifespan during which an organism’s homeostatic mechanisms are temporarily compromised or less resilient to external stressors, leading to an increased susceptibility to illness, injury, or functional decline. These windows can be acute, such as the post-exercise recovery phase, or chronic, such as periods of significant hormonal transition like perimenopause. Identifying and mitigating these periods is crucial for preventive clinical practice.
