Window of Susceptibility

Meaning

A specific, biologically delimited temporal period during the life course or developmental trajectory of an organism when exposure to an environmental stressor, chemical agent, or hormonal imbalance can induce a disproportionately severe, often permanent, adverse health effect. This critical concept highlights a phase of heightened biological vulnerability due as a result of rapid cell division, differentiation, or the critical organization of a particular organ system. In endocrinology, the intrauterine period, infancy, and puberty are considered prime windows of susceptibility where hormonal disruption can lead to lifelong metabolic and reproductive dysfunction. Understanding these windows is essential for targeted preventive medicine.
