Willpower Neurochemistry

Meaning

The specific array of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and associated brain circuitry that underlies the cognitive capacity for self-control, delayed gratification, and the persistent pursuit of long-term goals despite immediate temptations or internal resistance. This neurochemistry is largely governed by the balance of dopaminergic signaling in the reward pathways and the regulatory control exerted by the prefrontal cortex. It is the biochemical substrate of executive function and volitional behavior.
