White Matter Integrity Index

Meaning

The White Matter Integrity Index is a neuroimaging-derived metric, often quantified using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), that assesses the structural health, organization, and connectivity of the myelinated nerve fiber tracts within the central nervous system. A high index signifies optimal myelination and coherent axonal bundles, which is essential for rapid, synchronized neural communication. Compromised integrity is associated with cognitive decline and impaired neuroendocrine signaling.
