WHIMS Study

Meaning

The WHIMS Study, an acronym for the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study, was a significant, large-scale clinical trial conducted as an ancillary study to the main Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial. This study specifically investigated the effect of postmenopausal hormone therapy, specifically estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin, on cognitive function and the risk of developing probable dementia in older women. Its findings provided critical, and sometimes cautionary, data on the neurocognitive impact of hormone replacement.
