Water Retention

Meaning

Water Retention, clinically known as edema, is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body’s interstitial spaces, often reflecting underlying disturbances in fluid balance regulated by the kidneys and hormones. In hormonal health, this frequently links to mineralocorticoid excess, such as aldosterone, or fluctuations in sex steroids that influence sodium and water reabsorption. Recognizing the hormonal drivers is key to differentiating benign fluctuation from pathological retention. This imbalance affects cellular communication.
