Water Retention

Meaning

Water retention, clinically known as edema, is the abnormal accumulation of excess fluid within the circulatory system or in the interstitial spaces between cells, leading to swelling, most commonly observed in the extremities. While various systemic diseases can cause this condition, in the hormonal health context, it is often a transient side effect related to fluctuations or high levels of specific hormones, such as estrogens or high doses of exogenous androgens. Managing fluid balance is essential for cardiovascular and symptomatic well-being.
