Voluntary Activation Level

Meaning

Voluntary activation level (VAL) is a neurophysiological measure quantifying the extent to which an individual can consciously recruit and activate their motor units during a maximal voluntary muscle contraction. This level is a direct index of the nervous system’s efficiency in driving the muscle to its full potential, distinct from the muscle’s intrinsic contractile strength. Clinically, a suboptimal VAL suggests a central nervous system limitation, rather than a peripheral muscle weakness, which is crucial for differential diagnosis and targeted rehabilitation strategies.
