Volumetric Bone Mineral Density

Meaning

A precise, three-dimensional measurement of the mineral content per unit volume of bone tissue, typically expressed in units of grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). This measurement, often obtained using quantitative computed tomography (QCT), is a more accurate indicator of true bone strength and microarchitecture than the two-dimensional areal bone mineral density (aBMD) measured by DEXA. It is a critical metric for assessing skeletal health and the efficacy of hormonal therapies that influence bone metabolism.
