Volumetric BMD

Meaning

Volumetric BMD (Bone Mineral Density) is a precise measure of bone density expressed in three dimensions (grams per cubic centimeter, g/cm³), providing a true density measurement that accounts for bone size. This contrasts with the more common areal BMD (g/cm²), which is a two-dimensional projection. Volumetric BMD, typically assessed using quantitative computed tomography (QCT), offers a more accurate assessment of bone strength and is less prone to confounding by bone size, which is critical in evaluating the skeletal effects of hormonal changes.
