Vocal Fold Thickening

Meaning

A structural change in the vocal folds (cords) characterized by an increase in the mass, stiffness, and overall bulk of the lamina propria, which results in a perceptible lowering and often a roughening or deepening of the individual’s vocal pitch and quality. This is a common and distinct physical manifestation of chronic supraphysiological androgen exposure or, less commonly, severe laryngeal irritation. It represents a direct somatic effect of hormonal signaling.
