Vitamin K2 Carboxylation

Meaning

Vitamin K2 carboxylation refers to the biochemical process where specific glutamic acid residues within certain proteins undergo a post-translational modification, acquiring an additional carboxyl group. This gamma-carboxylation reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme gamma-glutamyl carboxylase (GGCX) and strictly requires Vitamin K, particularly K2 forms like menaquinones, as an essential cofactor to facilitate the activation of these proteins.
