Vitamin D Production

Meaning

The complex, multi-step biochemical process initiated in the skin where exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation converts the precursor molecule 7-dehydrocholesterol into previtamin D3, which then isomerizes to Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This process is the primary physiological route for obtaining Vitamin D, a critical secosteroid prohormone essential for calcium homeostasis, immune modulation, and broad hormonal regulation. Its production is a key element of skin endocrinology and systemic health. Adequate synthesis is non-negotiable for metabolic and skeletal integrity.
