Visceral Adiposity Indices

Meaning

Visceral adiposity indices are quantitative clinical measurements and calculations used to estimate the amount of metabolically active fat stored deep within the abdominal cavity, surrounding the internal organs. Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat is strongly correlated with increased systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk. These indices, which include waist-to-hip ratio, abdominal circumference, and imaging-derived measurements, are superior predictors of cardiometabolic risk compared to simple Body Mass Index (BMI). Monitoring these indices is crucial for assessing metabolic health.
