Visceral Adiposity Index

Meaning

The Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) is a gender-specific mathematical indicator used in clinical practice to estimate the amount of visceral fat and its associated endocrine dysfunction. Calculated using anthropometric measurements like Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference, combined with metabolic parameters such as triglycerides and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the VAI serves as a powerful proxy for cardio-metabolic risk. A high VAI strongly correlates with insulin resistance and an adverse hormonal profile.
