Visceral Adiposity Aromatase Upregulation

Meaning

Visceral adiposity aromatase upregulation describes the phenomenon where the excessive accumulation of metabolically active fat around the internal organs (visceral adiposity) leads to an increased expression and activity of the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1) within that fat tissue. Aromatase converts androgens into estrogens, and its upregulation in visceral fat significantly contributes to elevated systemic estrogen levels, often resulting in estrogen dominance or functional androgen deficiency. This mechanism is a key driver of sex hormone imbalance, particularly in men and postmenopausal women, and is closely linked to metabolic risk.
