Visceral Abdominal Tissue

Meaning

A type of adipose tissue stored deep within the abdominal cavity, closely surrounding vital internal organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. Clinically, excess visceral abdominal tissue (VAT) is recognized as a metabolically active, pathological fat depot strongly correlated with systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. It is distinct from subcutaneous fat and represents a major cardiovascular risk factor.
