Virchow’s Triad

Meaning

Virchow’s Triad describes the three broad categories of pathological factors that are thought to contribute fundamentally to the formation of a thrombus, or blood clot, within the circulatory system. This triad remains a cornerstone concept in clinical medicine for assessing a patient’s risk of developing venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. The factors often act synergistically to promote clot formation.
