Vigilance Decay

Meaning

Vigilance Decay is a neurocognitive and physiological phenomenon characterized by the progressive decline in the ability to maintain sustained attention and perform tasks requiring continuous monitoring over a prolonged period. Clinically, it is a significant indicator of chronic fatigue, neuroendocrine imbalance, or suboptimal circadian rhythmicity, reflecting a depletion of attentional resources. Vigilance decay can be objectively measured and often correlates with elevated stress hormones and poor sleep quality.
