Vermeulen Equation

Meaning

The Vermeulen Equation is a mathematical formula utilized to estimate the concentration of free testosterone in circulation, relying on measured levels of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and albumin. This calculation provides an indirect assessment of the biologically active fraction of testosterone, which is unbound to carrier proteins and thus available to exert its effects on target tissues. It serves as a practical alternative when direct measurement of free testosterone is not readily available or exhibits questionable reliability.
