Ventricular Hypertrophy

Meaning

Ventricular Hypertrophy is a pathological condition characterized by the abnormal thickening and enlargement of the muscular walls of the heart’s ventricles, most commonly the left ventricle. This structural change occurs as a response to increased workload, typically due to chronic hypertension or valvular disease, which increases the heart’s afterload. While initially compensatory, sustained hypertrophy can lead to reduced ventricular compliance, impaired diastolic filling, and eventually, heart failure. Clinically, it is a serious marker of cardiovascular risk and requires prompt intervention.
