Ventilatory Drive

Meaning

Ventilatory Drive is the fundamental physiological stimulus originating in the central nervous system, primarily within the brainstem, that precisely regulates the rate and depth of an individual’s breathing. This drive is an essential homeostatic mechanism, ensuring the maintenance of optimal partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the arterial blood and regulating systemic pH. Hormonal factors, notably progesterone, can subtly but significantly modulate the sensitivity of this drive, a phenomenon relevant in conditions like sleep apnea and during specific phases of the female menstrual cycle.
