Ventilatory Control

Meaning

Ventilatory control is the precise, automatic physiological process responsible for regulating the rate and depth of breathing to maintain optimal partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the arterial blood. This involuntary control system constantly adjusts respiratory drive in response to metabolic demands and changes in the body’s chemical environment. Effective ventilatory control is fundamentally critical for maintaining acid-base balance and ensuring the sustained efficiency of aerobic energy production during rest and physical exertion.
