Venous Thromboembolism

Meaning

Venous Thromboembolism, often abbreviated as VTE, describes a condition where a blood clot, known as a thrombus, forms within a vein. This umbrella term encompasses two primary clinical manifestations: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), which is a clot typically forming in the deep veins of the leg or pelvis, and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), which occurs when a part of this clot breaks away, travels through the bloodstream, and lodges in the pulmonary arteries of the lungs, obstructing blood flow.
