Venous Thromboembolism

Meaning

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a severe clinical condition that encompasses both deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, and pulmonary embolism (PE), which occurs when a part of that clot travels to and lodges in the pulmonary arteries. VTE is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, representing a critical risk factor that must be assessed, especially when considering the initiation of certain hormonal therapies. The condition requires immediate clinical attention due to its potential for life-threatening complications.
