VDR Polymorphism

Meaning

VDR Polymorphism refers to a common genetic variation, or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), within the gene that encodes the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR), the nuclear receptor protein that mediates the biological effects of the active Vitamin D hormone, calcitriol. These inherited variations can alter the VDR’s structure, expression level, or ligand binding affinity, leading to significant individual differences in the body’s response to Vitamin D. This polymorphism is clinically relevant due to Vitamin D’s extensive role in hormonal health, bone metabolism, and immune function.
