Vascular Tone

Meaning

Vascular Tone describes the intrinsic state of tension or contraction maintained by the smooth muscle cells within the walls of blood vessels, especially the arterioles, which critically regulates total peripheral resistance and consequently, systemic blood pressure. This tone is under constant, dynamic modulation by both local tissue signals and systemic neurohormonal input. It is a key determinant of tissue perfusion pressure.
