Vascular Stiffness

Meaning

Vascular Stiffness, also known as arterial stiffness, is a pathological condition characterized by the loss of elasticity and increased rigidity of the arterial walls, particularly in the large, central elastic arteries like the aorta. This stiffening is considered a hallmark of vascular aging and is an independent, powerful predictor of cardiovascular disease risk, including hypertension, heart failure, and stroke. It compromises the circulatory system’s ability to buffer the pulse wave generated by the heart.
