Vascular Smooth Muscle

Meaning

Vascular smooth muscle (VSM) refers to the involuntary, non-striated muscle tissue that forms the medial layer of the walls of arteries, arterioles, veins, and venules throughout the systemic circulation. The primary physiological function of VSM is to regulate blood vessel diameter through contraction and relaxation, a process known as vasoconstriction and vasodilation. This control is critical for regulating systemic blood pressure, tissue perfusion, and the distribution of circulating hormones.
