Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell

Meaning

A Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell (VSMC) is a non-striated muscle cell type that forms the middle layer, or tunica media, of arteries and veins, playing a critical role in regulating blood vessel tone and blood pressure. The contractile state of these cells, which determines vasoconstriction and vasodilation, is highly responsive to hormonal signals, including those from the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and sex steroids. Dysfunctional VSMCs contribute significantly to vascular stiffness and the pathogenesis of hypertension and atherosclerosis, major concerns in longevity medicine.
