Vascular Resistance

Meaning

Vascular Resistance, most commonly referred to clinically as systemic vascular resistance (SVR) or peripheral resistance, is the measure of the total opposition encountered by blood flow throughout the entire systemic circulatory network, primarily generated by the friction between the flowing blood and the internal vessel walls. This physiological parameter is a key, non-negotiable determinant of arterial blood pressure, given that mean arterial pressure is mathematically proportional to the cardiac output multiplied by the SVR. Maintaining an optimal level of resistance is absolutely essential for the precise regulation of tissue perfusion and overall cardiovascular health.
