Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1

Meaning

Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1, often abbreviated as VCAM-1, is a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of activated endothelial cells, which line the inner walls of blood vessels. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules and is instrumental in mediating the specific binding and recruitment of leukocytes from the bloodstream into tissues. This molecule acts as a molecular “handshake” between the vascular system and immune cells.
