Vascular Calcification

Meaning

A pathological process characterized by the deposition of calcium phosphate crystals within the smooth muscle cells and extracellular matrix of the arterial walls, leading to arterial stiffness and reduced vascular compliance. This is not a passive process but an active, cell-mediated event akin to bone formation within the vessel wall. Vascular calcification is a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, often accelerated by chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and hormonal aging.
