Vaginal Lubrication

Meaning

Vaginal lubrication is the physiological process of fluid transudation and glandular secretion that naturally moistens the vaginal walls, primarily initiated in response to sexual arousal. This fluid is essentially a plasma filtrate that originates from the engorged blood vessels in the vaginal wall, supplemented by secretions from the Bartholin’s and Skene’s glands. Adequate lubrication is functionally critical for comfortable sexual activity, maintaining the integrity of the vaginal epithelium, and protecting against micro-abrasions. The quality and quantity of this response are strongly dependent on the systemic hormonal status, particularly the level of circulating estrogen.
