Vagal Afferent Tone

Meaning

Vagal Afferent Tone refers to the strength and consistency of the sensory signals transmitted from the body’s organs, particularly the gut, heart, and lungs, back to the brain via the afferent fibers of the Vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X). A robust, high vagal afferent tone is a physiological marker of parasympathetic nervous system dominance and is clinically associated with resilience to stress, reduced systemic inflammation, and a stable mood. It represents the body’s internal state of calm and homeostatic control.
