Vagal Afferent Pathways

Meaning

Vagal Afferent Pathways are the sensory nerve fibers of the Vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X) that transmit physiological information from the visceral organs—including the gut, heart, and liver—to the central nervous system, particularly the brainstem. These pathways constitute the primary route for the gut-brain axis, conveying signals about satiety, inflammation, nutrient status, and microbial metabolites. This afferent signaling is critical for modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and overall neuroendocrine balance.
