Uterine Fibroids

Meaning

Uterine fibroids, clinically termed leiomyomas or myomas, are common, benign, non-cancerous tumors that originate from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. These growths are highly prevalent in women of reproductive age and are classified as hormone-dependent tumors, with their proliferation being significantly stimulated by both estrogen and progesterone. Symptoms can range from asymptomatic to severe, including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and reproductive complications, often necessitating clinical intervention.
