Urogenital Atrophy

Meaning

Urogenital Atrophy, also clinically termed Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), is a collection of signs and symptoms resulting from the hypoestrogenic state associated with menopause, affecting the labia, clitoris, vagina, urethra, and bladder. The condition is characterized by thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal and lower urinary tract tissues due to estrogen deprivation. Symptoms often include vaginal dryness, irritation, pain during intercourse (dyspareunia), and recurrent urinary tract infections, significantly impacting a woman’s quality of life and sexual health.
