Urinary Indican

Meaning

Urinary indican, also known as indoxyl sulfate, is a metabolic byproduct of tryptophan. It forms when intestinal bacteria metabolize dietary tryptophan into indole, which is absorbed. The liver then conjugates this indole with sulfate, creating indoxyl sulfate, excreted via the kidneys into urine. This substance serves as a biomarker of gut bacterial activity.
