Urinary Indican

Meaning

A metabolic byproduct, specifically indoxyl sulfate, that is excreted in the urine and serves as a clinical marker for intestinal dysbiosis or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). It is produced when certain gut bacteria excessively metabolize the amino acid tryptophan, generating indole, which is then conjugated in the liver to form indican. Elevated levels suggest an imbalance in the gut microbiome.
