Uric Acid

Meaning

Uric acid is the final metabolic end product of purine degradation, a nitrogenous compound that circulates in the plasma and is normally excreted by the kidneys. While primarily known for its association with gout when plasma concentrations are excessively high, this molecule also functions as a potent antioxidant in the systemic circulation, protecting against oxidative stress. However, chronic hyperuricemia is clinically significant in hormonal health as it correlates with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and endothelial dysfunction, indicating a broader metabolic derangement.
