Upregulation

Meaning

Upregulation refers to a cellular process where there is an increase in the number of receptors on the surface of a target cell, or an enhancement in the sensitivity of existing receptors, leading to a heightened cellular response to a specific stimulus, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter. This mechanism allows cells to become more responsive to signaling molecules, optimizing their functional capacity even when ligand concentrations are low.
