Uncoupling Protein 1

Meaning

A mitochondrial inner membrane protein, primarily expressed in brown adipose tissue (BAT), that functions to dissipate the proton gradient generated by the electron transport chain, diverting energy from ATP synthesis toward non-shivering thermogenesis. This protein, also known as UCP1, is a key effector of metabolic rate and energy expenditure. Its activation is a critical component of the body’s adaptive thermogenesis and may play a role in metabolic flexibility and weight management.
