UGT2B17 Gene

Meaning

The UGT2B17 gene encodes the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 2B17 enzyme, a critical phase II metabolic enzyme predominantly expressed in the liver and steroid-responsive tissues. This enzyme is responsible for the glucuronidation of various endogenous compounds, most notably the inactivation and subsequent renal excretion of testosterone and its metabolites. The presence or absence of a common gene deletion polymorphism significantly impacts an individual’s rate of testosterone clearance and, consequently, their circulating androgen levels and urinary excretion profile.
