UGT2B17

Meaning

UGT2B17 is a specific isoform of the Uridine 5′-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme family, predominantly expressed in the liver and responsible for a critical phase II detoxification pathway known as glucuronidation. Its primary role in hormonal health is the conjugation of androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), with glucuronic acid, rendering them water-soluble for urinary excretion. The genetic deletion or reduced activity of this enzyme can significantly impact the metabolic clearance rate of endogenous and exogenous steroids. This enzyme is a key determinant of an individual’s hormone metabolite profile.
